"I would have thought it would have been a demon."
"Who would have suspected cancer at such a young age?"
"It's a shame, really. He was such a nice boy."
Such a nice boy...if Anya had to hear that phrase used to describe Xander one more time...
No one even knew, most certainly not her. But, then again, they had grown apart. Still, he was her first love, and you never really forgot your first love, or at least that's what everyone was telling her.
"Anya?"
The English accented voice was unmistakable. The dreariness of the day had allowed Spike to leave his refuge and be outside. Just to be on the safe side, he carried an umbrella with him, half in case of sun and half in case of rain.
"Yeah," she said, kneeling by Xander's grave.
"Buffy wanted to know if you were okay. The funeral's been over for a few hours now."
"Really? What time is it?"
"Almost dusk." He knelt down next to her. "Did he know...?"
She nodded. "He knew. He was happy for me," she said, smiling slightly. She stood up. "Spike, what are we going to do? I never got to tell him the other news."
"That you were a demon again, or that you were pregnant with his child?"
"I told him I was pregnant," she said quietly. "I didn't tell him about being a demon again or...about..."
"Us," he said quietly.
"He was dying! And, I mean..."
Spike embraced her lightly. "I understand. It was a good choice."
She relaxed. "I hoped you'd see it that way."
"Well, at least you aren't a vengeance demon this time. Because if you were and I hadn't seen it that way..."
Anya laughed her fist true laugh since Xander's death. "Yeah. But being a vengeance demon got me three important things. Xander, you, and her," she said, looking down at her belly.
"Well, now that you've had your time alone with him, care to have some time alone with your friends?"
Anya nodded. "All right," she said, taking Spike's hand and heading towards where her friends were.
