Fred counted her breaths. She counted how many times Wesley squeezed her hand. She counted the number of times he started to cry.
Counting had always kept her sane before, but now, with whatever it was crowding her out, counting was all that was keeping her…her.
She started to count the number of times her heart beat as she realized she was losing the fight. She knew it was the end, and she was terrified. There was so much to say, to do, to learn and to be…
And it would all disappear. When she stopped counting, she would disappear.
