Bartlett was out of office. Even though Josh wanted her to stay on and work for the enw president, she declined. Having been the head of all the activity of the staff had been tiring; she still couldn’t figure out how Leo had ever done it.

Of course, Leo had had a heart attack…

No, she needed a break. Someplace away from Washington, away from the press, away from the United States. There wasn’t anything really keeping her in one place at the moment; she had promised Josh she would do something to help him, but that could wait. For now, she needed change.

It was her first afternoon in London. She hadn’t been there before, even though she had traveled extensively. She ended up in a park and just sat, staring at the world in front of her, clearing her head of the past for just a few moments.

“Pardon me,” a distinctly British, distinctly male voice said, jarring her from her thoughts.

“Yes?” she asked, moving her focus to a handsome man with slightly graying hair and glasses.

“I thought you might like to know that your lunch has been carried off by birds,” he said, indicating where her open sandwich had sat.

“Damn,” she said quietly. “I like roast beef, too.”

“I know a good deli that makes amazing sandwiches,” he said, smiling. CJ noted he had a nice smile. “I was on my way to get lunch…if you wish, I’d love the company.”

“Why not?” CJ said. She wanted a change. She was getting a change. “What’s your name? I’m CJ Craig.”

“Rupert. Rupert Giles.” He held out her hand to help her up. “I’m very fortunate to meet you.”

“I am, too,” CJ said, taking his hand. “Thanks.”
