Buffy smiled.

None of her friends remembered seeing her smile like this in a long time. After Joyce’s death, and subsequently her own death and return to Earth, Buffy had been a few shades more morose than usual.

But today, Buffy smiled.

She looked through the book, grinning more and more the farther she got. Once or twice, she even laughed, a rich, hearty laugh. With each flip of the pages, she just smiled some more.

Xander smiled, too. Who had known that a book full of Calvin & Hobbes would bring some joy back into Buffy’s life, however briefly?
